Defence Contractors and SAS Caught in Major Data Leak

A data breach at Karlskrona-based IT provider Miljödata has exposed personal information from around 25 private companies, including Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and aerospace manufacturer GKN Aerospace. The breach is already circulating on the Darknet and is considered one of the largest of its kind in Sweden.

The incident was first reported for its impact on municipalities and regions, where thousands of public employees had their personal details leaked. New findings from SVT show that companies tied to national defence and critical infrastructure are also affected.

Thousands of SAS employees listed
More than 28,000 individuals linked to SAS appear in the leaked material, including a large number of active pilots in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Exposed data includes names, social security numbers, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.

“From a safety perspective, it is unfortunate that this could have happened. We are not just any professional group and there is a total defence perspective on this,” an SAS pilot told SVT.

GKN Aerospace compromised
GKN Aerospace, which manufactures aircraft engines for both the civilian and military markets and is a key partner of the Swedish Armed Forces, is also among the victims. Several thousand employees are affected. The company’s Trollhättan plant is classified as a protected site due to the sensitivity of its operations.

National security risks
According to intelligence expert Jörgen Holmlund, the leaked personnel lists are of interest to foreign powers. “With a personnel list from a company like this, they can identify, for example, engineers who may be possible to exploit,” he said. Russia and China are considered active in targeting Western technology.

Limited response from companies
SVT contacted SAS, GKN Aerospace, Axfood, Scania, Sandvik and Volvo. None provided comment. Sandvik and Volvo have confirmed to employees that their data has been compromised.

The breach highlights vulnerabilities in third-party IT providers and raises concerns about the security of firms tied to Sweden’s defence sector.
