Age Comment Sparks Storm After Firing of SJ CEO

When SJ abruptly fired its CEO Monica Lingegård on Sunday, the decision was already surprising. But the explanation from chairman Kenneth Bengtsson ignited a far bigger controversy. He pointed to Lingegård’s age—she turns 63 this year—as part of the reason she was shown the door.

That remark has now blown up into a political and public debate about age discrimination in Sweden’s workplaces.

At a press conference with the Riksdag’s pension group, Minister for the Elderly and Social Insurance Anna Tenje (Moderates) called the statement “pretty strange.” She didn’t weigh in on Lingegård personally, but she was clear about the broader issue: “It puts the finger on the age discrimination that exists in our country and that I think we must work with.”

The backlash was immediate. Critics said the comment reinforced outdated stereotypes and undercut efforts to keep older professionals active in the labor market.

By Monday, Bengtsson was backpedaling. Speaking to Dagens industri, he admitted his words had been “unusually stupid.” He insisted that age played no part in the actual dismissal, saying his real point was that many CEOs, after long careers, choose to step back around 65. “There are many exceptions,” he added, while apologizing “unconditionally” for the wording.

Still, questions remain. Bengtsson has not explained what actually prompted the board to fire Lingegård. No performance criticisms have been made public, and he has dismissed speculation about whistleblowing or conflicts over her leadership style. Lingegård herself has said she wanted to continue leading SJ.

Bottom line: the firing of a CEO is always a big story. But here, the fallout from one careless sentence has shifted the spotlight onto a bigger debate—how Sweden values the experience of older workers, and whether ageism is still quietly shaping decisions at the top.
