Enköping, Sweden — The Swedish government has selected the town of Enköping to serve as NATO’s primary logistics hub for northern Europe, with the task of coordinating troop movements and military supplies across the region. The decision was announced on Thursday following negotiations between Stockholm and NATO, Swedish Television (SVT) reported.
Located around 70 kilometres northwest of Stockholm, Enköping already houses Swedish Armed Forces command and communications units, making it a natural choice for the new regional role. The hub will support the movement of allied forces across Scandinavia and the Baltics, a region seen as strategically important for NATO operations after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Strategic Role for Sweden
The new responsibility places Sweden more firmly at the centre of NATO’s northern defence infrastructure following its accession to the alliance earlier this year. Enköping will act as a command point to coordinate deployments during exercises, rapid reaction operations, and potential crisis scenarios.
Military analysts say the hub will strengthen NATO’s ability to respond quickly in northern Europe. “The Baltic Sea region is one of the alliance’s most exposed frontlines. Sweden’s integration into NATO logistics significantly increases operational flexibility,” said one Stockholm-based defence expert.
Economic and Local Impact
The establishment of the logistics hub is expected to bring additional investment and jobs to Enköping, though local officials acknowledge it may also make the town a focal point in the event of regional conflict. NATO and Swedish defence officials are currently working on details regarding infrastructure upgrades and staffing needs for the facility.
Sweden’s Rapid NATO Integration
Since formally joining NATO, Sweden has moved quickly to take on roles within the alliance’s command and logistics framework, complementing Finland’s entry in 2023. Together, the two Nordic countries provide NATO with extended territory and infrastructure that reinforce security across the Baltic Sea.
Enköping’s designation as a logistics hub marks one of Sweden’s first major assignments within NATO, underscoring the country’s strategic location and growing importance in allied defence planning.
