Øresund Bridge Sees Record Traffic as Cross-Border Mobility Surges

The Øresund Bridge has reached new heights in road traffic during the first half of 2025, according to fresh figures from Øresundsbro Konsortiet. More vehicles than ever before have crossed the fixed link between Denmark and Sweden, underlining its growing importance for regional connectivity, business, and everyday life.

Traffic rose by 6.6 percent compared to the same period last year, equivalent to an average of over 20,400 passengers each day. The strongest growth was recorded in leisure travel and commuter flows, which expanded by 7.7 percent and 9.7 percent respectively. Freight traffic also saw a solid increase of 3.3 percent, underscoring the bridge’s strategic role for Nordic logistics.

Linus Eriksson, CEO of Øresundsbro Konsortiet, highlighted the figures as a testament to the enduring significance of the link, which marks its 25th anniversary this year. “This rise in traffic is a clear sign that the bridge continues to play an increasingly vital role in people’s daily lives—whether for work, leisure, or business,” Eriksson noted.

Since its opening in 2000, the Øresund Bridge has been a cornerstone in the integration of the Øresund region, not only accelerating cross-border commuting but also boosting tourism and strengthening trade ties between Denmark and Sweden. The sustained increase in passenger and freight volumes points to robust regional economic activity and a deepening of cross-border interdependence.

As policymakers and businesses focus on future cross-border infrastructure and green transitions in transport, the Øresund Bridge’s record-breaking year stands as both a milestone and a signal of accelerating regional dynamics in the Nordics.
