Record-Breaking Defence Investment
Norway has signed a landmark agreement to acquire at least five British Type 26 frigates, the largest military purchase in the country’s history, valued at around £10 billion ($13.5 billion). Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed the deal after a competitive process that weighed offers from Germany, France, the US, and the UK.
Why Britain Won
London’s bid prevailed thanks to Norway’s close defence ties with the UK and the advanced design of the Type 26, built from the keel up for anti-submarine warfare. The agreement cements a long-term partnership between the two NATO allies, covering joint development, training, and operations.
Submarine Hunting in the North Atlantic
The new fleet’s primary mission is tracking submarines in Norway’s critical North Atlantic waters, where Russian nuclear boats are an increasing concern. Each ship will carry anti-submarine helicopters, deploy cutting-edge sonar, and be ready for future integration with unmanned platforms.
Industrial and Economic Impact
The contract secures roughly 4,000 jobs in the UK, more than half of them at BAE Systems’ shipyards in Scotland. Deliveries to Norway are due to start in 2030. By keeping the Norwegian and British ships nearly identical, the navies will be able to share parts, maintenance, and even crew rotations.
Strengthening NATO’s Northern Flank
Norway’s decision reflects growing pressure on European security since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The frigates will bolster NATO’s presence in the High North, improve allied coordination, and give Norway a far more capable toolset to monitor Russian submarine activity.
