Danish Retail Sector Set for Record Christmas Sales

Danish retail sales are poised for a historic surge this Christmas season, according to new forecasts from the Danish Chamber of Commerce. The business organisation predicts that total retail turnover will reach 97 billion DKK during the months of November and December, marking a record high for the Danish market.

Strong Growth Despite Price Increases

This year’s forecast represents a 4% increase over the same period last year. However, it’s important to note that roughly half of this growth is attributable to rising prices rather than a surge in consumer volume. The robust growth is reflective of a broader trend in the retail sector, as Danes are expected to continue their strong spending habits during the festive season.

Lotte Engbæk Larsen, Industry Director at the Danish Business Council, explained that the Danish economy remains resilient, with healthy private finances supporting an increase in Christmas spending. She emphasized:

“The economic data shows that Danes have a strong personal economy, and this will be reflected in Christmas shopping.”

Retail Sales Momentum Building

The prediction of record-breaking sales is already visible in October’s retail performance. Retail turnover in October 2025 rose by 4.9% year-on-year. This was the fastest growth rate in six months, surpassing September’s growth of 3.3%. The surge in retail spending is largely being driven by non-food categories—particularly toys, apparel, and electronics—which are key to December’s gift shopping.

Non-Food Categories Leading the Way

The Danish Chamber of Commerce highlighted a strong performance in the non-food sector. The specialized non-food index surged to 116.7 in October, up from 114.7 the previous month, and was 5% higher compared to the same month in 2024. This growth is largely attributed to increased demand in consumer electronics, toys, and fashion, all of which are expected to see a significant uptick in sales as Christmas approaches.

E-commerce Driving Extra Growth

Online shopping is also playing a major role in boosting Denmark’s retail performance. The Danish B2C e-commerce market is expected to grow at 5.5% annually, reaching an estimated 148 billion DKK by 2029. A significant portion of this growth is concentrated in the months of November and December, providing a digital boost to brick-and-mortar retail sales.

A Strong Economic Backdrop

The forecasted retail boom is supported by a positive macroeconomic environment. The Danish government has recently revised its 2025 GDP growth forecast upwards, and real wages have turned positive. This economic stability strengthens the Danish Chamber of Commerce’s claim that consumers are in a good financial position to increase their spending during the holiday season.

Conclusion: Record Christmas Sales in Sight

Taking all factors into account, the forecast of 97 billion DKK in retail sales for the Christmas period looks realistic. Approximately half of the 4% growth is expected to come from increased sales volume, with the other half stemming from higher prices. Unless November data shows any significant downturn, Denmark is on track for its largest Christmas shopping season on record.
